Overview

Liberal Arts courses help students develop a greater understanding of themselves and their relationships with others, as well as a greater understanding of diverse ideas and cultures. These courses provide the following essential skills and knowledge to be successful in any field:

  • Learning skills to meet your personal, career, and academic needs in a society of change.
  • Critical thinking and analysis skills crucial in a society requiring problem solvers.
  • Written, oral, and collaborative skills critical in a society requiring the ability to work with diverse groups.

A Liberal Arts education helps students gain a better perspective on personal and societal issues in order to become better prepared for life experiences and to become socially responsible citizens.

Instruction Methods

Liberal Arts instructors use a variety of traditional and innovative teaching and learning methods to educate their students.  Learning experiences may include the following:

  • Collaborative Learning – Allows students to work in small groups to help each other develop knowledge and skills through shared learning.
  • Computer-Assisted Instruction – Courses held in the computer labs, which allow students to develop their writing and computer skills at the same time.
  • Learning Communities –Two courses taken simultaneously which allow students to develop a greater sense of community among learners; assignments are used for both courses.
  • Service Learning – Students link real word experiences in the community with academic course work to better understand social issues and civic responsibility.
