Financial Aid
Students who are taking ESL classes and are enrolled in an eligible degree program may receive federal student aid for up to 30 hours of ESL coursework.
Other eligibility requirements for federal student aid include:
- Must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, refugee, persons granted asylum, Cuban-Haitian entrants, and some other eligible categories.
- Must posses a high school diploma, GED, documentation of home schooled or meet minimum requirements on Ability to Benefit (ATB) test.
- Must be in good standing at the college
- Must be in good standing with the Department of Education’s Federal Student Aid programs

Students enrolled in only ESL classes may be eligible for institutional funding in the form of Opportunity Scholarships for tuition and fees. Visit the International Student Office for an application and details.
Registration Process for NEW ESL Students
- Go to Admissions and Records
- Complete application form (Student Information Form)
- Submit application to Admission and Records.
- Go to the Testing Center
- Take the CELSA test to determine your level of English. (45 minutes.)
- Go to the Advisement Center
- Sign in to see an advisor
- Give advisor test results.
- Discuss placement into ESL classes based on test results.
- Review costs and other expenses.
- Discuss financial aid possibilities.
- Register for appropriate ESL classes with advisor.
- Receive a class schedule
- Go to the Cashier’s Office to Pay
- Give the cashier class schedule.
- Pay for classes by the date on schedule or set up a payment plan.
- Receive invoice marked PAID
- Bring invoice to classes.
- Go to the Center for Student Life for College ID (free)
- Present invoice marked PAID.
- Present a picture ID.
- Have picture taken
- Receive a college ID card.
- Go to Admission and Records for Parking Sticker for Car (free)
- Present invoice marked PAID.
- Receive a parking sticker for car.
CELSA and ASSET Tests
In order to determine your level of English and correct placement in an ESL class, you will take the CELSA test. This test is given at the college testing center. This is a pencil and paper test consisting of multiple choice questions. It takes approximately 45 minutes to take this exam.
An advisor uses the CELSA test score to help you register for the appropriate ESL class. If you score within the highest range of the CELSA scale, the advisor will ask you to take the ASSEST test to determine your accurate placement within the academic writing classes for non-native speakers of English.
